In a flashback, Irene Hickson (Tony Peach) suggests Steve just received a herpes diagnosis. She says yes before explaining how Steve rushed out of the office without speaking. Robin asks Irene if she thinks Steve had a crush on Margot. She suggests Margot was showing them that she’d never accept gifts from patients. She claims Margot threw them away when they arrived. Janice admits to believing someone else sent the chocolates. She says Margot was a “hypocrite” because she’d toss something and retrieve it when no one was looking. Irene claims Margot tossed the box of chocolates in the bin like she was too good to accept them. Robin asks if Margot ever received any gifts from Steve. Irene Hickson (Carol MacReady) tells Robin that Steve was a flirt. After claiming he left without warning, she says he enjoyed drinking. Cormoran asks what state was Steve in when Margot disappeared.
She says people thought Steve killed Joanna, a married woman, with three children, who committed suicide. Janice Beattie (Anna Calder-Marshall) describes Steve as a “gorgeous” man always with a joke. Gupta’s staff because Steve attended the Christmas party as someone’s guest. Cormoran says they are going to interview Dr. Robin tells George that witnesses who reported the altercation between two people are credible. George questions if Steve tainted the chocolates with drugs. She says Gloria Conti (Jessica Impiazzi) allegedly saw the unopened box on Margot’s desk about 30 minutes before she left the office. Gupta’s office believed Steve sent Margot a box of chocolates. He suggests Steve may have changed his name again after he vanished. He says soon after Julie began dating Steve, her body was discovered in the camp’s pool. He informs George that Steve changed his name to Steve Jacks after Margot had been missing a year, at which time he started working for Baxton’s holiday camp. She informs him of Joanna’s husband abusing her.Ĭormoran says Talbot believed Steve was also connected to Julie Wilkes’ death. George questions why none of the detectives investigated the bruises. She suggests the bruises on her neck may be evidence that someone forced it down her throat after she was unconscious. She says her death was ruled a suicide by ingestion of an industrial weed killer.
Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger) informs DI George Layborn (Samuel Oatley) that DI Bill Talbot (Morgan Jones) linked Steve to the death of a married woman, Joanna Hammond, that he was having an affair. Margot Bamborough (Abigail Lawrie) saw Steve Douthwaite (Jack Morris) weekly for six weeks. Frustratingly, then, it takes too many episodes for them to share substantial screen time with one another.The episode begins with Cormoran Strike (Tom Burke) saying Dr. Saddled with a plainly terrible boyfriend (Kerr Logan), Robin isn’t a great character per se - she’s too much of Cormoran’s Girl Friday for that - but her shifting relationship with her temp boss turned mentor is one of the series’ few bright spots, as is the respectfully flirty chemistry between the two leads. But the pang of “not enough” was most keen when it came to the scenes between Burke and his co-star Holliday Grainger, who faultlessly embodies the earnest, thrill-seeking Robin. Strike was “not enough”: not enough plot, not enough characterization, not enough suspense, not enough of its own DNA. The phrase that recurred in my mind as I watched C.B. Neither the investigators nor the suspects sustain interest, which makes the final installment, when Cormoran himself is accused of murder, especially uncompelling. But the cases feel so stretched out and the pacing so vexingly bovine - as if the writers and directors were told to fill a set number of minutes - that the mysteries repel emotional investment. At least the first two take place within the high-fashion glitterati and the back-stabbing literati of London, respectively - settings that the production designers practically eat up. It doesn’t help that the show’s trio of somewhat lurid whodunits are stubbornly uninvolving.
