Finding "wood" studs is a daily problem for me. Just make sure that your mirror will cover all your holes.
But just remember not all members will be running vertical. The best advice is if you know where your mirror is going to be sitting, take a hammer and a nail and just tap it through the drywall and see what you will hit. The problem if you have horizontal strapping on a wall or plaster, the stud might be actually fairly deep in the wall behind the drywall so you have to use a longer screw to hit it. There is good advice here that a stud is usually on one side of a plugin or outlet or either side of a heat vent. You could also have a wall that has been covered in plywood or osb underneath the drywall which will give you very weird readings that sound like you mentioned.
As mentioned before it could be a wall with plaster on it which also will mess up the stud finder but there should be inch and a half wide straps running horizontally also.Ĥ. If you have a plugin or an outlet on the wall that'll give you a hint and then if you measure in 16-in or 2 ft increments away from the side+3/4" of it and use a longer screw or nail you might hit it.ģ. Although that's strapping will have to be attached to something vertical, but it'll be pretty hard to find. Which could cause a problem even if you find it as it might not be at the correct height to mount your mirror at. You will have to expand your search to go up and down on a wall instead of left and right. Probably every 16 in also but they tend to be wider so 3 and 1/2 in. So instead of finding vertical studs you will have to look for horizontal ones. Sometimes for a variety of reasons the contractor will run strapping on a wall. If it's a fire wall between 2 units it could have 2 layers of drywall which will mess up cheaper stud finders.Ģ. But several things could be messing up the reading.ġ.
